 우리는 애견에 대해 단도직입적으로 말하기를 좋아합니다. 애견이 자신의 의견을 말로써 표현하지 못하는 것을 마치 이용하듯 훈자서 마음껏 만들어 냅니다. 우리 애견은 소심하다, 우리 애견은 내가 없으면 항상 우울해 있다, 우리 애견은..... 대부분의 견주들은 마치 자신이 애견인 것 처럼 이야기 하곤 합니다. 이에 대한 근거를 물어보면 하나같이 그냥 주인이기에 안다고 말합니다. 주인이기에..... 그 주인이 애견에 대해 내리는 섣부른 판단이 어떠한 결과를 가자오는지 이야기해 보겠습니다. 여러분은 애견에 대해 무엇이라 이야기 하십니까? 사랑스럽다고, 혹은 포악하다고, 통제불능, 예측불어라고 말할 수도 있을 겁니다. 이러한 이야기는 지금 애견의 성격과 현실을 말하는 것이지요. 물론, 실질적으로 야견의 입장에서 알 수 있는 성격과 현실이 아닌, 그저 타인인 주인의 시각일 뿐입니다. 문제는 여기서 시작됩니다. 조금의 의심도 망설임도 없이 애견의 성격과 현실을 분명히 말할 수 있다는 것은 그 모습의 미래 행동을 예측한다는 것을 뜻합니다.  

 "우리 애견은 소심해요."

 지금의성격은 소심하며, 현실은 이에 맞추어 소극적일 것입니다. 물론 주인의 시각에서 볼 때 말이지요. 그렇다면 이 소심한 애견의 주인은 내일의 모습도 알 수 있을까요? 소심했던 애견이 다음 날 활발해 질 것이라 말할 수 있을까요? 사실 말할 필요도 없습니다. "우리 애견은 소심해요." 라는 단입적인 문장에 그런 가능성은 0%라고 명확히 말하고 있으니깐요. 현재 시점을 나타내는 단어는 빠진 채, 단정지어 내려버린 결론은 아주 먼 미래까지 예언하고 있습니다. 그럼 이 다음은 어떻게 될까요?

"우리 애견은 000 해요."

1. 애견의 성격과 현실을 말하고 있다.

2. 앞으로의 행동까지 확신에 찬 소리로 예측하고 있다.

3. 이 애견이 존재하는 한, 지금의 문제가 사라지지 않을 것이다.

 왜냐하면, 지금의 성겨과 현실에서 발생한 문제는 이 두가지가 불변일 때, 해결될 수 없기 때문입니다. 이미 미래 행동을 예측해 놓고, 애견의 미래에 이러한 문제가 고쳐지기를 바란다면 상당한 오류 아닐까요? 즉, 여기서 애견에 대한 문제를 고칠 이유가 사라지게 됩니다. 애견이 지금과 달리 변할 것이라 생각하지 않는다면, 지금의 문제가 좋은 방향, 혹은 나쁜 방향으로도 변할 수가 없는 것이지요.

 애견에 대해 마치 모든 것을 아는 듯이 거만하게 말하는 우리들은, 그들의 영혼을 무시하며 수많은 반려생활 문제의 근원임을 이제는 깨달아야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 애견에 대해 모르는 것이 더 많다는 사실까지 말입니다.
