 애견과 매일 산책하는 것은 매우 중요하며, 주인으로써 분명한 책임이라고 많은 전문가들이 이야기합니다. 해외에서는 산책 도우미라는 직업이 있을 정도이며, 애견 산책을 위해 조기 퇴근 하는 사례도 있습니다. 그만큼 산책이라는 것은 우리의 생각보다 훨씬 중요하다는 것이겠지요. 하지만, 우리나라의 현대 사회에서는 상당량의 경제활동이 요구되고 이로 인해 애견을 산책 시키기는 커녕, 함께 있어줄 시간 조차 부족한 것이 현실입니다. 아침에 일어나 간단히 아묵나 챙겨 먹은 뒤 애견에게 물과 사료를 내어주고 바로 출근합니다. 온 종일 힘들게 일하고 돌아온 후에도 여가활동을 즐기거나 자기발전을 위한 활동을 하게 되지요. 이러한 부분을 포기하고 애견을 챙겨주기란 무언가에 중독된 것을 끊는 것처럼 매우 힘든 일이라는 것을 모두 이해하실 겁니다. 보다 나은 반려생활이 아닌, 자신의 삶을 향상시키고 싶어하는 마음에 중독된 우리들은 애견을 위해 함께 할 수 있는 짧은 시간 조차 쉽게 내어주지 못하고 있는 듯 합니다.

 애견을 키우는 것이 새로운 뉴스거리가 될 수 없을 정도로 많은 직장인들이 애견과 함께 하고 있습니다. 또한 반려생활 의식 수준도 높아져 애견에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 잘 알고 있지요. 그렇기에 함께 오랜 시간 하지 못하는 것에 대해 매우 미안한 마음을 가지고 있는 경우가 대부분입니다. 경제활동, 여가활동 때문에 함께 있지 못하거나 개인적인 이유로 무관시했 했던 적을 포함하여 우리는 항상 애견에게 미안해 하고 있습니다. 즉, 애견과 함께 해주어야 한다는 강박에 얽매이고 있는 것입니다. 무언가에 얽매인다는 것은 선택의 폭을 제한하게 되어 전체적으로 건강한 관계를 이루지 못하게 하는 주된 원인이지만, 여기서 빠져나오는 것은 쉽지 않은 것도 사실입니다. 항상 애견에게 미안한 마음, 애견이 어떻게 받아들이든 상관없이 우리는 늘 미안하기에 간식이나 장난감을 더욱 사다주며 달래보지만, (애견이 아닌) 우리의 마음은 쉽게 풀어지지 못하고 실제로 그렇게 하지 않는다 하더라도 선택의 폭이 좁아진 것에 대해 불만이 생길 수밖에 없습니다. 행복해야 할 반려생활이 애견에게 얽매이게 되는 구속적인 삶으로 바뀌게 되는 것이지요.
